How Do Faucets Work

If you are wondering how does the water comes into your kitchen faucets, washroom sprayer faucet, and garden faucet, we have some information to share with you. Several designs of faucets are available with some modifications in their working principle. Finest water jet tubs also contain the latest faucets on them. Before moving towards the typical faucets work mechanism, let’s have a look at the parts of a faucet. A faucet consists of the following components;

  • Cap/Index button
  • Handle
  • Stem Cartridge
  • Seat
  • Spring
  • Faucet Spout
  • Aerator
  • Aerator wrench

Most of the taps come with a cap or an index button. It opens and closes the lid for the flow of water. If it is a circular handle, with each rotation, the amount of water flow increases as the valve inside the faucet opens. But if it is a straight handle amount of water flow depends on the height of the handle. If you want more outflow of water, raise the handle.

Some faucets have a single handle but control the flow or mixing of water. It can move in two directions. And the direction of the handle determines whether it will be hot water or cold water that flows out. If the direction is on extreme right or left, too cold or too hot water flows out.

The stem cartridge is present inside the tap and tells how much the valve is open. When there is no more space, the stem cartridge stops moving. Faucet sprout is the part through which water moves out. At the opening of the faucet, the sprout is an aerator that keeps the flow of water accurately. The water moving out of the tap does not splash out. The seat is a small plastic placed on the spring and helps in the movement of the stem cartridge.

Some of the common types of faucets are:

  • Stem and valve faucet
  • Compression faucets
  • Ball faucets
  • Disc faucets
  • Cartridge faucets

Stem and Valve Faucets

It consists of a single unit with all the components assembled inside it. The uppermost part is the handle, which is attached to the stem and cylinder. It is a faucet with a single handle and connects directly to the hot and cold water supply. You can adjust the temperature of water by turning the handle right or left. It also has an attached sprayer. This sprayer can be used for regular washing and for rinsing by pushing the button on the top of the sprayer.

Compression Faucets

The internal structure of this faucet consists of a rubber washer inside a metal screw. It is present at the same location where we apply thread around on the stem. When you tighten the stem, the rubber washer pushes the valve, and water flow stops. And when the rubber washer is released, water flows out. The compression faucet is among the oldest available faucets and is not widespread due to leakage problems.

Ball Faucets

It is a washerless faucet with a ball bearing for control of hot and cold water flow. There is only one handle and cap, which is used to adjust the temperature of the water.

Disc Faucets

These are cylindrical faucets that are more efficient and elegantly designed. It has a single handle which moves up and down and also side-side. There is an upper and lower disc, top disc moves as handle moves, while lower disc remains in place, thus controls the flow of water.

Cartridge Faucets

They have both single and double handles. So you don’t need to move the handle up and down or rotate sideways for controlling water.

Two-handle Faucet Working

Two Handle Faucet Working

It has two separate handles. The function of these handles is to maintain the temperature of water flowing through the tap. One handle is for controlling the flow of cold water while the other is for controlling hot water. By raising the handle or turning the cap, you can increase the amount of water flowing through the tap. When you raise the handle, it releases pressure from the washer, which results in the flow of water out of the faucet. The same happens in a case; you are using a cap faucet.

Faucet Tap Working

New Style Faucet Tap Working

The working of the faucet tap is not a complicated process. By turning the cap, it releases the pressure on the rubber washer. As the rubber washer relaxes, it allows the water to move up. When you rotate the cap towards downward, it increases pressure on the washer and stops the inflow of water.

Faucet Seat Working

Faucet Seat

The faucet seat holds the rubber washer in place. If it does not hold washer correctly, the tap will not work properly and water leaks.

How does a faucet cartridge work?

faucet cartridge parts

Cartridge faucet does not have double handles. It has a single handle to control the temperature and flow of water. When you raise the handle, it increases the flow of water. For cold water, turn it to the right, while turning to the left brings warm water. If you want to balance the temperature of the water, keep the handle in the middle of the faucet. You can install a water tank yourself at home in the backend to get water in them all the time.
